Speaking Tour

Speaking EventsI’ve been speaking publicly since 1986 when I first discovered I had epilepsy. I thought it important to rebel. Rebel against those who told me I shouldn’t ride a bike, play outside, talk to people about the fact that I had epilepsy. How would I rebel? By speaking out and clear and letting everyone and anyone know that where there's a will there's a way!!!
  • From 1988 - 1990 I was a spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation of America.
  • From 1990 - present I have been a spokesperson for the French Foundation for Research on Epilepsy.

It was a pleasure speaking there.

Much to my dismay I could only fly in to Taz for a lunch conference and then fly out the same day so I didn't see a whole lot of the gorgeous scenery I've heard so much about. I did, however meet some very active people all ready and willing to overcome the myths surrounding epilepsy. I also met a Elle, a 6 year old with epilepsy who's very motivated to be a future soccer star!

From Taz it was back to Melbourne for the ride4epilepsy where I was in extremely good company all day long, riding over 200 kms with a stop or two and in the Melbourne sunshine!
After the ride it was on to Perth where I recorded two interviews on local radio spoke to the local epilepsy foundation and met the lord mayor of Perth who depsite her busy scheduel found some time to meet with us.

A busy day in Sydney…

this week Australia has launched an epilepsy awareness campaign all over the country in order to raise awareness on epilepsy. On september 25 there will be the first ever www.ride4epilepsy.com.au at the Sandown motor racecourse just outside of Melbourne. A recent longitudinal study funded by UCB and conducted via the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria has shown that many people who have epilepsy suffer from exclusion and discrimination of some sort because of epilepsy. 1 in 100 Australians have epilepsy so it is time for a national campaign to make it's way into the national education system as well.

Mike Tomalaris catches up with Cycling Legend Marion Clignet to discuss her visit to Australia.

European Conference on epilepsy in Berlin and Ambassador summit in Bruxelles

When:
September 27, 2008
Where:
berlin to brussels

The mad dash started when I crossed the finish line in Lyon...I hailed a cab, went up to the auberge where we had stayed, showered, got in another cab and went to some friend's house who lived near the airport. They dropped me off and I was on my way to Berlin via two planes one of which would temporarily lose my luggage. par for the course.
I made it to Berlin quite late but just in time to meet the other speakers for dinner at the parliament. On the roof we could see the lights of Berlin but it was raining so we didnt stay on the rooftop too long and I couldnt get any good shots.
